59 minutes doubles every minute .if it is full in 60 minutes after doubling from the previous minute(minute 59)then it was half full then

No. of bacterial cell initially present in the cup = 1

The population of bacterial cells becomes twice in every minutes,

Thus,

No. of bacterial cells after 1 min = 2*1 =2^1

No. of bacterial cells after 2 mins = 2*2 = 2^2

No. of bacterial cells after 3 mins = 2*2*2 = 2^3

No. of bacterial cells required to fill half cup = 1/2 *2^60

                                                                          =2^60-1

                                                                          =2^59

Therefore, the time taken by bacterial cells to fill half cup=  59 minutes

Hence, the correct option is D.
