This is a question on circuit connection.

1) Cells in series

The effective voltage is the sum of the voltage of individual cells.

V(effective) = V1 + V2 + V3 + .......

Effective current is equal through out the circuit.

I ( effective) = I1 = I2....

2) Cells in parallel

The effective voltage is same across the circuit.

V (effective ) = V1 = V2...

I ( effective) = I1 + I2 + .......

The effective current is the sum of individual currents of each cell.

Answer:

The first series connection :

we have : 1.2 + 1.2 + 1.2 + 1.2 = 4.8 V

The second connection is in parallel hence voltage is same across the circuit.

The answer is therefore 4.8 V
