A cell is prepared by dipping a zinc rod in 1m zinc sulphate solution and a silver electrode in 1m silver nitrate solution. The standard electrode potential given: e 0 zn2+ / zn = - 0.76 v, e0 ag+ / ag = + 0.80 v what is the effect of increase in concentration of zn2+ on the ecell?

What happens is that when increase the concentration of zinc ions the emf of the cell decreases.

First and fore most y need to appreciate the fact that this reaction is carried at standard conditions, that is the concentrations at each half cell are unity i.e 1 mole each. and temp of 298K and 1 atm.

so when we alter this concentration by increasing [Zn2+], the emf will decrease.

Prove this using Nearst equation.

According to Nernst equation the term log part will increase if concentration of zn^2+ increases which will lead to the decrease of E0cell

Ecell decreases with increase in concentration of zn2+
