A cell having internal resistance r when connected across an external resistance R will supply maximum current when:

(A) R=r

This can be calculated in the following ways:

  • We know that, in series combination of cells, Current I = nE / ( nr +R′ )
  • And in parallel combination of cells, I′ = E / [ (r/n)+R ]
  • Now, if I = I′ then,

        nE / ( nr +R′ ) + E / [ (r/n)+R ] =  nE / ( r + nR )

  • Thus, it is possible if  R=r.
