A certain city has an area of 1300 square miles and is covered by a cellular system using a seven cell reuse pattern. Each cell has a radius of 4 miles and the city has 40 mhz spectrum with a full duplex channel bandwidth of 60khz. Find: (i) the number of cells in the service area. (ii) the number of channels per cell. (iii) total number of subscribers that can be served.

Answer:

Explanation:

Given A certain city has an area of 1300 square miles and is covered by a cellular system using a seven cell reuse pattern. Each cell has a radius of 4 miles and the city has 40 mhz spectrum with a full duplex channel bandwidth of 60 khz. Find: (i) the number of cells in the service area. (ii) the number of channels per cell. (iii) total number of subscribers that can be served.

Given

1. Radius of a cell = 4 miles.

Area covered by cell = 50 square miles

Area covered by cluster = 7 x 50 = 350 square miles.

So number of cells required to cover 1300 square miles is 28.

2. Number of channels per cell will be total number of channels / number of cells in a cluster.

So frequency is 40 Mhz

Channel bandwidth is 60 Khz

So number of channels available is 40 Mhz / 60Mhz = 666 channels

Now number of channels per cell will be 666/7 = 95

3. Therefore total number of subscribers that can be served = 666 x 4 = 2664 subscribers
