Concept:

The AMA of a simple machine can be defined as the ratio of output to input forces and the IMA of a simple machine can be defined as the ratio of input distance to output distance.

Given:

Mass of car, m = 900 kg

Distance, d = 0.25 m

Force applied, F = 150N

Distance by piston, p = 20 cm = 0.2 m

Find:

The IMA, AMA, and efficiency.

Solution:

AMA = Output Force/Input Force

AMA = (900×9.8)/150

AMA = 58.8 = 59

IMA= Input Distance/Output distance

IMA = 0.2 / 0.25 = 0.8

IMA% = 80%

Efficiency can be defined as the ratio of AMA to IMA,

Efficiency = AMA/IMA

Efficiency = 59/80

Efficiency = 0.7375

Efficiency% = 74%

Hence, IMA, AMA, and efficiency of the machine is 59, 80%, and 74% respectively.
