Let the no of original men be 'x'

Work complete in 50 days.

If x + 7 then work completed in 40 days.

Then, x by 50 = (x+7) by 40.

Cross multiplication.

40 x = ( x + 7 )* 50

40 x = 50x + 350.

2x = 400 by 40

x = 5 men.
