A certain number of soldiers stand for a parade in such a way that the no. of soldiers in each row is 2 more than the total no. of rows if the no. rows are doubled and no. soldiers in each row is reduced by 7 the total no. soldiers is increased by 160. Find the original no. of soldiers in each row.

Answer:

Let the number of soldiers in each row be = x

so the number of rows = x-2

then , total number of soldiers = x(x-2)

=>  x^{2}-2x

If the number of rows are doubled the number of rows will be 2x-4

Now the number of solders in each rows = x-7

so total number of solders = (2x-4) (x-7)

=> 2x^{2}-18x+28

As per given condition, we get

2x^{2}-18x+28 = x^{2}-2x+160

x^{2}-16x -132=0

x(x-22) + 6(x-22) =0

=> (x-22) (x+6) =0

=> (x-22) =0  or (x+6)=0

=> x = 22

=> x= -6

(discard  x=-6 because number of rows can't be in negative)

thus, number of rows =22

so number of soldiers in each row = 22
