A certain number when successively divided by 11 and 5, leaves a remainder of 5 and 2 respectively. What is the least possible number in this case?

27.

Please note that I did it without using any specific algorithm, rather I got the answer by trial and error.

The number leaves a remainder of 5 when divided by 11.
So obviously, it will greater than 11. If we add 5 to 11 we get 16, which doesn't give the remainder as 2.

So, I took 22, (11*2 =22) added 5 to it to get 27. When divided by 5, it leaves 2 as the remainder.

I hope I'm correct.

deathrider: Nice one!
deathrider: but if remainder is 5, it does not always have to be greater than 11.
deathrider: what about 5/11 ?
deathrider: anyway, correct answer. Thanks.
Zenishtha: Okay, I got what you r thinking. Welcome!!
Zenishtha: I wasn't thinking it that way. Thanx for helping me in grasping another concept.
