a certain species of desert lizard digs tunnels in which to lay its eggs. the eggs must incubate inside the tunnel for several weeks before hatching, and they fail to hatch if they are disturbed at any time during this incubation period. yet these lizards guard their tunnels for only a few days after laying their eggs.

HELLO FRIEND HERE IS YOUR ANSWER,,,,

It's a bit chaotic and doesn't have any correctable opinions and does not opine but , I'll still try to address it and clear the doubts...

ANSWER ::

We are put into a specified Situation or more or less to provide satisfactory arguments which clears the context in this question.

By restructuring the whole question we can deduce this..

Here, Lizards containing some species which are evolved and/or made to dig those tunnels in a well moisturising soil where they lay all the fertile eggs for incubating them and addressing to hatch out another same Lizard Species.

All of the eggs are showing failure to hatch out from their shells "if" a disturbance in their incubation period is created in a specific time period (I don't know how much but , let's say for a typical lizard species it should be 2 or 3 weeks as such) this causes a havoc and disturbs the cycle of normal hatching and creates unusually or abnormal Lizard species or say , Young Lizards with abnormalities.

Species are restricted only to protect and/or guard those tunnels created by them for incubating and releasing out young Lizards "for only a few days" (as addressed in the question) after the eggs were laid into those tunnels. Supposedly they are genetically programmed or in the sense created to provide as shield for evolution, progenitors and successful continuation of generations.

Now as per the question we can reason some of the strings as to provide a meaningful outlook or say , arrive to a conclusion.

So , what is the actual need of "Guarding a tunnel for such a small time period?" This makes it look controversial and debatable..

Lizards , when compared to Humans need to pass on their generically obtained genetic traits for future or upcoming generations and as previously mentioned they Andrew "Genetically Programmed" to undergo such tasks for protecting and nurturing their eggs so that it becomes eligible for Hatching out by those external supports and internal supports. For this they must ensure that all the external stimulating environmental factors remain steady and prevent it from abnormalities including ensuring a proper Hatching by a normal life cycle. Incubation periods are guarded and successfully undertaken in a short time span of "few days" , there might be some environmental and artifical factors which might require more weeks to maintain and stabilise the total Incubation period without any interruption.

After that, why it isn't a problem to guard it anymore after the period of Incubation? ain't it intrigues you much? Let me give some light...

Yeah, after that time scale is diminished they stop the usual protection of those tunnels. Instead they adopt some other methods in which they don't have to tirelessly guard then anymore. One would be Camouflaging tunnel entrances or concealing then with high amounts of sand, slit , etc. Or, This makes predatory animals to interrupt the cycle for those "first days" and/or "for the coming days", hence , ensuring Lizards to leave the protection and stand by those factors without any tension. We can arrive at one more point that the predatory species are unaware of those tactics played by them. A possibility is, the only ones to distribute the total disturbance will be Progenically same species or the species belonging to the same Lizard species,

This will make the statement more "non-argumentative" and surely address and detail fully, without any more questions.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU AND GIVES A CLEAR VIEW FOR THOSE LIZARD SPECIES!!!!!
