A charged spherical conductor has a surface density of 0.07 C cm2. When the charge is
increased by 4.4 C, the surface density changed by 0.084 C cm-2. Find the initial charge
and capacitance of the spherical conductor.

Answer:

Explanation:

Here, σ1=0.07Ccm−2 and σ2=0.084Ccm−2. Let q be the charge on the spherical conductor of radius r cm.

∴Σ1=q4πr2=0.07 …(i)

and σ2=q+4.44πr2=0.084 ….(ii)

Dividing (ii) by (i), we get

q+4.4q=0.0840.07=1.2 or q=22C

From (i),

r=q4π×0.07−−−−−−−−√=22×74×22×0.07−−−−−−−−−−−−√=5cm

r=0.05m

C=4π∈0r=0.059×106=5.56×10−12F
