A check marked with NSF by the bank means that the instrument has not been honored  because the account holder does not sufficient funds in the account to honor the check written against it or the account holder has closed its account with the bank.There are several other reasons for not honoring a check such as ;

a) The account holder funds have been frozen .

b) Intentionally cancelling the check in order to deny payment.

c) Presentation of a false check on an non existing account.

d) Mutilation to the check.

In case of NSF the bank returns the dishonored check to the account holder and charges  a non-sufficient funds fee.

Option C is correct.
