we can use red litmus paper for a test

if we dip red litmus paper into HCL which is a acid the colour remain unchanged but if we dip into sodium hydroxide the colour changes to blue because sodium hydroxide is a basic solution.

Beside litmus paper you can use any indicator to know weather it is base(sodium hydroxide) or acid (HCL)
