To find:

Number of checkens farmer has ?

Solution:

Let the farmer had X number of chickens and y number of cows.

chickens have two legs and cows gave four legs.

Hence according to the given condition ,

x + y = 106 → (1)

2x + 4y = 266 →(2)

There are two variables in the equations hance we have to eliminate one variable.

multiplying equation ( 1) by 2 and subtracting equation (2) from (1) we get

2x + 2y = 212

- 2x - 4y = - 266

0 - 2y = - 54

y = 54/2

y= 27.

substituting value of y in equation (1) we get

x + y = 106

x + 27 = 106

x = 106 - 27

x = 79

Hence farmer has 79 chickens and 27 cows.
