Given:

A child has strayed from his path while coming home from the school. He

first goes 3 kms towards south from his school and then moves 5 kms

towards east. He again moves 3 kms towards north and then goes 2 kms

towards west.

To find:

How far is his school situated from home?

Solution:

From given, we have,

A child first goes 3 kms towards south from his school and then moves 5 kms  towards east. He again moves 3 kms towards north and then goes 2 kms  towards west.

Consider the attached figure while going through the following steps.

From figure, it's clear that a child almost forms a rectangular path.

Let "x" be the distance between the school and the home.

Thus, x = 5 - 2 = 3 km.

The total distance covered = 3 + 5 + 3 + 2 = 13 km

The displacement = 3 km.
