To find out the median of any given data (in which the value of numbers will be odd), 1st of all we need to arrange the numbers from the the data in ascending order. Then we have to start cutting of the first and last number. At the end only one number will be left with us that is the median of the data.
The child indeed got his answer wrong because he started cutting out numbers directly without arranging them in ascending order.

The correct median for the given data-
ascending order- 3,5,14,18,20
= 3/,5,14,18,20/
=5/,14,18/
=14
therefore 14 is the median for the data.
(plz mark my '/' as a cut sign like the one we use in division in the form of fraction)
