It means that our most lasting and meaningful investment is in nurturing the development of our children because theirs is a lasting inheritance which goes on and on through the ages. Whereas trees take a long time to mature and can be a worthwhile legacy, they are still mortal and will eventually die. Rice is by contrast ephemeral in that it lasts only one year and then must be replaced. The well educated child influences the future forever through his or her influence on endless generations. Therefore the education of a child is a worthy and a wise investment. Very straightforward, really.
