As the total no: of pastries bought isn't given we can only find the answer by trial and error method.
Lets assume the no: of chocolate pastry bought = x
and no: of fruit pastry bought = y
cost of 1 chocolate pastry = Rs 26
cost of x chocolate pastry = Rs 26x
similarly cost of fruit pastry = Rs 18 y
It is given that the total cost = Rs 500
therefore
Rs 26x + Rs 18 y = Rs 500
by trial and error method we can put various values for x and y and try to find the answer.
I have found the correct answer witha lot of effort, for my friend.
If we assume x= 4 and y = 22 , then
26 X 4 + 18 X 22 = Rs 500
104 + 396 = 500
∴ no: of chocolate pastries bought = 4
no: of fruit pastries bought = 22

Let us assume that total no. of chocolate pastries be x and that of fruit pastries be y.
Therefore,
26x+18y= RS. 500
26×13+18×9=500
338+162=500
500=500
LHS=RHS
Therefore he bought 13 chocolate and 9 fruit pastries.
