Answer:

30cm

Step-by-step explanation:

Let AB be the required chord on the circle with centre O

Let L be the foot of perpendicular from O on AB

Now given,

OL = 8cm

OA = r = 17cm

Let AL be x cm

Now in right angled triangle ∆OLA

OL² + AL² = OA² ( By Pythagoras theorem)

8² + x² = 17² ( Putting the values obtained earlier)

x² = 17² - 8²= 289-64 = 225

x = /sqrt{ 225}

 \sqrt{225}

so x = 15cm

Again AL= LB = 15cm (since perpendicular from centre on chord bisects it)

so AB = AL + LB = (15 + 15)cm = 30cm
