Given :- A circle with radius 12cm , from a point P which is 20 cm away from the centre then length of tangent is ?

Solution :-

from image we have :-

  • OT = radius of circle = 12 cm.
  • OP = distance of point P from centre = 20 cm.
  • ∠OTP = 90° { A tangent to a circle forms a right angle with the circle's radius, at the point of contact of the tangent. }

in Right angled ∆OTP , by pythagoras theorem , we get,

→ OT² + TP² = OP²

→ (12)² + TP² = (20)²

→ TP² = 400 - 144

→ TP² = 256

→ TP = √(256)

→ TP = 16 cm . (Ans.)

Hence, The length of tangent is 16 cm.
