A circuit is simply a closed loop through which charges can continuously

move. A compass needle is placed beneath the wire at any location such that its

needle is placed in alignment with the wire. When the key is closed, it is

observed that the light bulb lights up and the compass needle deflect. When the

wire is disconnected at the battery, the light bulb is no longer lit and the needle

returns to its original position.

i) Why do you think the needle of the compass deflected?

ii) What might happen to the needle deflection if a more powerful battery is

used?

iii) What would be the result if the terminals of the battery were interchanged?
