A circular plate of diameter d is kept in contact with a square plate of edge d as show in figure. The density of the material and the thickness are same everywhere. The centre of mass of the composite system will be
(a) inside the circular plate
(b) inside the square plate
(c) at the point of contact
(d) outside the system.

(b) Inside the square plate

Explanation:

Given data

The diameter of a circular plate = d

Circular plate is kept in contact with a square plate.

Density and thickness of both the material are same.

To find - center of mass of the composite system

  • The circular plate mass and the square plate  can be concentrated at their centers.
  • Hence the center of mass of the system will be on the line joining its centers.
  • Because of the greater area, the mass of the square plate will be more than the circular plate.
  • Hence combined center of mass will be towards the square plate from the middle i.e. inside the square plate.
