Answer:

A cistern can be filled by a tap in 12 hours and by the other tap in 9 hours. If both taps are opened together how long will it take to fill the cistern? Time taken by the 2nd tap to fill the cistern = 9 hours. Therefore, both taps will fill the cistern in = 36/7 hours.

Step-by-step explanation:

work done by tap - 1/7

work done by outlet pipe -- -1/9

total work done = 1/7 -1/9 = 2/63

Time taken = 63 /2 hours

= 31 hours 30 min
