A class has 36 boys. If 1/4 of the boys sitting inside go outside, the number of boys sitting inside and outside will be the same. find the initial number of students sitting inside.

$\frac{1}{4} \: of \: boys \: sitting \: inside$

$x - \frac{1}{4x} = y + \frac{1}{4x}$

$\frac{(4 - 1)x}{4} = \frac{4y + x}{4}$

$3x = 4y + x$

$2x = 4y$

$x = 2y$

$x + y = 36$

$2y + y = 36$

$3y = 36$

$y = \frac{36}{3}$

$y = 12$

$x = 2 \times 12$

$x = 24$
