Given that the number of boys in the class is x

This implies the number f girls in the class is x too.

On the day that 8 boys are absent, the number of boys in class = x – 8

The number of girls in class on the same day is still x.

But since the number of girls on that day is twice the number of boys;

we get x = 2 (x – 8)

            x = 2x -16

            x = 16

Thus the number of boys in the class is 16 and the number of girls in the class is 16 too.
