A class has the same number of girls and boys. Only eight boys were absent on a particular day and then number of girls was double the number of boys. What is the number of boys and girls

given
$x - 8 = 2x$
because girls are double in this case
$x - 2x = 8 \\ - x = 8$
but we will take it positive because boys can't be negative
$2x = 8 \times 2 = 16$
but 8 boys were absent so total boys are
$8 + 8 = 16$
16 girls and 16 boys
