Let the salary received by the clerk in the year 2015 be rupees x then,
20% of x = 20/100 *x
then according to questions salary in year 2016 = x + 20/100*x
but salary in 2016 =72720
therefore
72720=x + 20/100*x
120/100*x=72720
x=(72720*100)/120
x=60600
therefore salary in 2015 =60600 rupees
