a clinical thermometer has a slight bend or kink in it's capillary tube to stop resist the flow of mercury on uplifting or while holding it upside down. If it would not be there mercury would have been flowing in capillary without being heated as it's a liquid.

A clinical thermometer has a slight bend to prevent the movement of mercury back into the bulb when the thermometer is taken out of the person's mouth.
