In case of clinical mercuric thermometer, the mercury expands and flows up the tube as the temperature rises. The mercury is forced up through the constriction by the force of the expansion. The body temperature is rarely below 35 and can go up rarely to 42 thus the readings in thermometer is within such degrees celsius. Clinical thermometers are designed within the ranges of body temperatures which is between35 and 42 degrees celsius that is why the reading degrees it can give is just within those ranges
