A coach wants to see how long the members of the water polo team can hold their breath. He times each member and finds that the average is 52 seconds. What type of study is this?

Average is basically the central value of the input data sets
Suppose you have n data sets then average will be the central value of the data sets
To calculate average

Average=(Sum of individual data inputs)/(Number of data inputs)

Example of an average of 5 numbers with data sets as {1,2,3,4,5}

Average=(1+2+3+4+5)/5
               =3

So the average value will be 3

Also there are other two terms as median and mode which also come in the statistical study

What is median?
Suppose you arrange a set data inputs in ascending order then then the median will be the one which lies in the middile
And suppose in the number of data inputs are even then the median will be 
Average of values at n/2 and (n/2)+1
 
What is mode?
Its is simply the data value which appears most of the times in the data sets

It is not necessary that
Average=Mode=Median

Average is also called as mean of values
