The cockroach sheds its eco skeleton as it grows. It eats and grows larger so it becomes cramped in its exoskeleton so sheds to enable it to have a larger more comfortable body.
Imagine a child growing whilst wearing the same clothes, eventually they will become tight and the child would have to get bigger clothes as it grows, it is the same with the cockroach because it’s skeleton is on the outside of its body
