A collection of 8 bits is called Byte.

  • In computer terminology, bits are considered to be the basic unit of data storage. Together, 8 bits make a byte which represents for example, a single letter, number or symbol.
  • A byte can hold a string of bits that need to be used in larger unit for use in the application. Even a visual image is made up of a string of bits in a program that shows images.
  • Four bits together make a nibble and hence, two nibbles constitute a byte. A kilobyte is formed by a collection of 1024 bytes.
  • Most computer applications compare file size and transfer rates in higher multiples of bytes like kilobytes and Megabytes .
