Given :   A company has determined that its weekly profit is a function of the number of items that it sells.  company sells x items?

To Find : Which equation could represent the weekly profit in thousands of dollars,

A. y^2=4x^2-100

B. y= -x^2+50x-300

C.x= -y^2+60y-400

D.x^2=-6y^2+200

Solution :

Weekly profit =  y  is function of items sold x

=> y = f(x)

Option A

y²=4x² - 100

one thing is its square of y also

its not defined for 4x² - 100  < 0

Hence this can not be the equation

Option B

y= -x²+50x-300

y = f(x)

Here y is a function of x

Hence equation could represent the weekly profit in thousands of dollars, y

option C.

x= -y^2+60y-400

this is x = f(y)   not y = f(x)

Hence this can not be the equation

option D.

x² = -6y^2+200

this is not y=f(x)

also this function is also not defined when x² - 200 > 0

Option B

y= -x²+50x-300

equation could represent the weekly profit in thousands of dollars, y, when the company sells x items
