A company hired 35 new employees and categorized them as per their
joining dates 21 had joined before 28.02.2012 and 14 had joined after
28.02.2012. The new joinees were called for a meeting to discuss any
problem they faced at workplace. 3 representatives were chosen randomly
to speak on behalf of the rest. What is the probability of selecting of 2
employees who had joined before 28.02.2012 and 1 after 28.02.2012?

Given:

Total number of employees hired by the company = 35

Number of employees that had their joining date before 28th February, 2012 (1st group) = 21

Number of employees that had their joining date after 28th February, 2012 (2nd group) = 14

To find:

probability of selecting of 2  employees who had joined before 28th February, 2012 and 1 after 28th February, 2012 .

Solution:

Number of ways of selecting 2 people from 1st group = ²¹C₂ = 210

Number of ways of selecting 1 person from 2nd group = ¹⁴C₁ = 14

Number of ways of choosing representatives = 210*14 = 2940

Total number of ways of selecting 3 representatives from 35 employees = ³⁵C₃ = 6545

Required probability = 2940/ 6545

= 0.449

Therefore the probability is 0.449.
