Answer:

Indigo was a dye that was extracted from the plant during old days. During pre- colonial indigo dye was not so popular at commercial level. It was first transport to Europe from India by Portuguese. During post colonial of British it was encouraged commercially. British were taking interest in indigo cultivation. They started cultivating the indigo at large scale in Bengal and it became more and more profitable at commercial level.

During 19th century production of indigo increased by East India company. Calcutta exported about four thousand of ton of indigo in a year. British were started making money and started growing indigo instead of food crops. They gave loans to farmers at high interest so that he remained in debt for whole life even it was passed to their children. This created a non violent revolution against indigo cultivation.

In India economy of indigo cultivation had declined in 21st century because some of the country such as German country started preparing synthetic dye of indigo that was much cheaper than natural dye that decreases the demand of indigo dye worldwide. Now most of the indigo dye used is made synthetically.
