On 2nd October, 2014, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, launched a nation-wide cleanliness campaign on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. The concept of Swachh Bharat is to provide sanitation facilities to every family, including toilets, solid and liquid waste disposal systems, village cleanliness, and safe and adequate drinking water supply. We have to achieve this by 2019 as a befitting tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his 150th birth anniversary. Modi said that the Swachh Bharat mission is beyond politics, inspired by patriotism and not politics. He also asked people to pledge 'na main gandagi karoonga, na main gandagi karne doonga' (I shall not litter and won't allow anyone to do so). He further flagged off a walkathon as part of the Swachh Bharat Campaign, which is not just a slogan, but our responsibility. Gandhi’s viewpoint on cleanliness Indians gained freedom under the leadership of Gandhiji, but his dream of a clean India is still unfulfilled. Mahatma Gandhi said "Sanitation is more important than independence". He made cleanliness and sanitation an integral part of the Gandhian way of living. His dream was total sanitation for all. Cleanliness is most important for physical well-being and a healthy environment. It has bearing on public and personal hygiene. It is essential for everyone to learn about cleanliness, hygiene, sanitation and the various diseases that are caused due to poor hygienic conditions. The habits learnt at a young age get embedded into one's personality. Even if we inculcate certain habits like washing hands before meals, regular brushing of teeth, and bathing from a young age, we are not bothered about cleanliness of public places. Gandhiji dwelt on cleanliness and good habits and pointed out its close relationship to good health.No one should spit or clean his nose on the streets. In some cases the sputum is so harmful that the germs infect others. In some countries spitting on the road is a criminal offence. Those who spit after chewing betel leaves and tobacco have no consideration for the feelings of others. Gandhi ji’s ideology on secularism Gandhi ji’s vision of clean india was not only garbage free india but also a country where minds were also garbage free which discriminated religions.he belived there shounldn’t be secularism amogst each others According to him  secular state is a place where religious values and discourse are cherished and respected in all spheres of life, the public as well as the private, but in which no single religion is allowed to dominate the others. This latter clause prevented Gandhi from supporting the Hindu nationalist (Hindutva) movement which is now so prominent on the Indian political scene. The Hindutva groups see secularism as an enemy because it is a barrier to Hindu hegemony. Gandhi’s religious discourse was accepted by his audience, and was effective in motivating them politically because they were, by-and-large, religious people. The deployment of religious language in modern British political life would be doomed to failure, because it would alienate the atheists, it wouldn’t satisfy the fundamentalists, and it would fail to motivate the masses. Perhaps all we are left with is our own private faith to motivate our actions in the political sphere, and a recognition of Wittgenstein’s deep spiritual truth. He held many press conferences and gave many speeches in different parts of India. Moreover he also swept and cleaned some previously dirty places himself. He talked to many people and raised funds for the cause. He participated and initiated numerous rallies for cleanliness.
He also made rules and regulations in schools hospitals and other public places. He created awareness among people by showing ads on TV and distributing pamphlets and leaflets in different languages in every part of India.

The largest-ever cleanliness drive in India completed three years on Monday. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan was initiated by the Narendra Modi-led government on October 2, 2014 to coincide with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Modi’s plan to clean up the streets and roads of urban and rural India, particularly focusing on the issue of the elimination of open defecation in the country is said to be drawn largely from Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas on sanitation and hygiene which the father of the nation considered to be more important than political independence.Mahatma Gandhi said "Sanitation is more important than independence".
