A magnetic compass can be used to make an electric tester.

Let see the example of this—

Aim- To observe the 'magnetic effects' of electric currents.

Material Required—

  • A long straightwire
  • switch
  • a torch
  • bulb
  • battery(of nine volts i.e. six cells of 1.5volts)

Observation

Make a simple electrical circuit consisting of Compass needle

long straight wire, switch/pug key, a torch bulb and a battery (of nine volts, i.e. six cells of 1.5 volts) as shown in the diagram. Now, hold a compass needle parallel to and over the wire. Switch on the current (for a short time only). What do we observe? As the Battery Switch current flows through the wire, the needle gets deflected. This shows that the current carrying wire can act like a ‘magnet.
