A compass needle does not point towards any fixed direction at neutral points ?

At the neutral point, the lines of force will not pass and compass needle will not point in any fixed direction. In other words, 'A neutral point in a magnetic field is apoint at which the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field and the magneticfield due to the magnet are exactly equal and opposite.

A magnetic compass without a surrounding magnetic field can point in any direction. Just put it inside an iron based container (like the hold of a steel ship, with the hatch closed).

All a magnetic compass does is line up with whatever the prevailing environmental magnetic field is. Without that field, it can point anywhere
