The opening between the right atrium and the right ventricle is guarded by the tricuspid valve.

A bicuspid or mitral valve gaurds the opening between the left atrium and left ventricle.

The valves of the heart allows the blood to flow only in one direction ie,from the atria to the ventricles and from the ventricles to the pulmonary artery of the aorta.

These valves prevent backward flow of blood.
