At School: Naming the Different
Places
Pierre, a French high school student, and his
class have been paired with another class in the
US, so that each class can practice with their
French or their English. Pierre and his
classmates have been assigned a video project
to tell their American peers about their daily life
at a French school. Pierre starts by describing
his morning school routine. Let's see how he
gets to school.
French English
Le bus (pronounced /büs/) 'The bus'
L'école (pronounced /ay-kol/) 'The school'
Le cours (pronounced /koor/) 'The class'
La cour de récréation
(pronounced /koor duh ray-
kray-ah-seeohn/)
'The
playground'
La salle de classe
(pronounced /sahl duh klas/) 'The
classroom'
In the video, Pierre starts by saying Le matin, je
prends le bus à 7.30. ('I take the bus every
morning at 7:30') and J'arrive à l'école à 8.00.
('I arrive at school at 8:00.') Pierre then says
Mon premier cours est à 8.30, donc je passe du
temps dans la cour de récréation avec mes
amis. ('My first class is at 8:30, so I spend
some time on the playground with my friends.').
Pierre finishes by saying Nous entrons dans la
salle de classe à 8.20. ('We enter the classroom
at 8:20.')
Translation: Pierre arrives at school at 8:00 and
enters the classroom at 8:20.
Types of Schools
For the purpose of the lesson, we are locating
the action in a high school ( un lycée ), but here
is the vocabulary for the institutions that
correspond to the different stages of education
in the French system.
French English
L'école maternelle
(pronounced /ay-kol mah-
tehr-nehl/)
'Pre-school/
Kindergarten'
L'école primaire
(pronounced /ay-kol pree-
mehr/)
'Elementary
school'
Le collège (pronounced /
koh-lehzh/) 'Junior high'
Le lycée (pronounced /lee-
say/) 'High school'
L'université (pronounced /
ü-nee-vehr-see-tay/) 'University'
The English expression 'to attend school' is
translated by aller à , followed by the type of
institution. For example:
Mon fils va à l'école primaire. ('My son
attends elementary school.')
Je vais au collège. ('I attend junior high.') →
Here, à becomes au because collège is
masculine, and it is grammatically incorrect
to say à le in French. Instead, we do what is
called une contraction ('a contraction'),
where à le becomes au .
In The Classroom
Now that Pierre is in his classroom, he wants to
show us around. Here are some important
words to know.
French English
Le bureau (pronounced /bü-
roh/) 'The desk'
Le manuel (pronounced /mah-
nü-ehl/)
'The
textbook'
La trousse (pronounced /
troos/)
'The pencil
case'
Le cartable (pronounced /kahr-
tahbl/)
'The
backpack'
L'enseignant (pronounced /o n
-seh-nee-o n/)
L'enseignante (pronounced /on
-seh-nee-o n -tuh/)
'The teacher'
Pierre says, Je m'assois à mon bureau et je
sors mes manuels et ma trousse de mon
cartable. ('I sit at my desk and I take my
textbooks and my pencil case out of my
backpack.') He then says, L'enseignante arrive à
8.30, et nous commençons avec le cours
d'histoire. ('Our female teacher arrives at 8:30,
and we start with our history class.')
