A compound 'A'(C2H4O2) react with Na metal to form a compound 'B' and evolves a gas which burns with a pop sound. Compound 'A' on treatment with an alcohol 'C' in presence of an acid forms a sweet smelling compound 'D'(C4H8O2) on addition of NaOH to 'D'angelo gives back B and C Identify A, B, C and D and write the reactions involved?

The first reaction

2CH3COOH + 2Na -----> 2CH3COONa + H2 (Gas)

CH3COONa -- Sodium Ethanoate

The second reaction

CH3COOH + C2H5OH -----> CH3COOC2H5 + H2O

Here in this reaction

CH3COOH – Acetic Acid

C2H5OH – Ethanol

CH3COOC2H5 – Ester

The third reaction

CH3COOC2H5 + NaOH -----> C2H5OH + CH3COONa

Your answers are

A – Acetic Acid

B – Sodium Ethanoate

C – Ethanol

D -- Ester
