A compound A (C₂H₄O₂) reacts with Na metal to form a compound ‘B’ and evolves a gas which burns with a pop sound. Compound ‘A’ on treatment with an alcohol ‘C’ in presence of an acid forms a Sweet smelling compound ‘D’ (C₄H₈O₂). On addition of NaOH to ‘D’ gives back B and C. The first reaction:
2CH3COOH + 2Na -----> 2CH3COONa + H2 (Gas)
CH3COONa -- Sodium Ethanoate
The second reaction:
CH3COOH + C2H5OH -----> CH3COOC2H5 + H2O
Here in this reaction
CH3COOH – Acetic Acid
C2H5OH – Ethanol
CH3COOC2H5 – Ester
The third reaction :
CH3COOC2H5 + NaOH -----> C2H5OH + CH3COONa
Your answers are
A – Acetic Acid
B – Sodium Ethanoate
C – Ethanol
D -- Ester
