A compound A(C2H4O2) reacts with Na metal to form a compound B and evolve a gas which burns with a pop sound. Compound 'A' on treatment with alcohol 'C' in presence of an acid forms a sweet smelling compound 'D'(C4H8O2). On addition of NaOH to 'D' gives back B and C. Identify A, B, C, and D with the equation involved.

hey buddy ,

here is your answer :-

compound A (CH3COOH) - ethanoic acid

compound B (CH3COONa) - sodium ethanoate

reaction -

2CH3COOH + 2Na -----> 2CH3COONa + H2

compound C (C2H5OH) - ethanol

compound D (CH3COOC2H5) - ester (ethyle ethanoate)

reaction -

CH3COOH + C2H5OH (in presence of concentrated (H2SO4) sulphuric acid )

----------> CH3COOC2H5 + H2O

Reaction of NaOH with 'D' -

CH3COOC2H5 + NaOH ----> CH3COONa + C2H5OH

Answer:

2 CH₃COOH + 2 Na ⇒  2 CH₃COONa + H₂O

      ( A )                                   ( B )

CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH ⇒  CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O

                        ( C )                 ( D )

CH₃COOC₂H₅ + NaOH  ⇒ C₂H₅OH + CH₃COONa

Therefore we identified

A - CH₃COOH

B - CH₃COONa

C - C₂H₅OH

D - CH₃COOC₂H₅
