a compound A has the empirical formula C2H4O2 react with Na to form a compound B and involves a gas which burns with a Pop sound . A treatment with an alcohol C in the presence of an acid form a sweet smelling compound D having formula C4H8O2. On adding of Na OH gives back B and C . Identify A , B , C , and D ? Write the reaction involved.

compound A is CH3COOH ( ethanoic acid)
B is CH3COONa ( sodium acetate)
C is C2H5OH ( ethanol)
D is CH3COOC2H5 ( ester)
the reaction involved are esterification and saponification ...

Answer:

2 CH₃COOH + 2 Na ⇒  2 CH₃COONa + H₂O

      ( A )                                   ( B )

CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH ⇒  CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O

                        ( C )                 ( D )

CH₃COOC₂H₅ + NaOH  ⇒ C₂H₅OH + CH₃COONa

Therefore we identified

A - CH₃COOH

B - CH₃COONa

C - C₂H₅OH

D - CH₃COOC₂H₅
