A compound is made up of two elements X and Y in the ratio 2:3 by mass. How

many atoms of each of these elements would be present in the molecules of the

compound? Give the molecular formula of the compound.

Y, At. wt. of X=10, At. wt. of Y=5

∴ Empirical formula mass =2×10+5=25

If Vapour density V.D.=25

Mol. Mass =V.D.×2=25×2=50u

n=  Emp.formula mass  / Mol.Mass  =  50/25 =2

Mol. formula =Emp.formula×2=X  square Y×2

=X to the power of 4 Ysquare
