The two OH groups on same carbon atom (gem diols)  is always unstable mainly due to the fact that two oxygen atoms on the same carbon leads to more lone pair-lone pair repulsion and static hindrance is  high this make the molecule unstable. this is same as cis isomer is unstable.........
