Compound x is ethyl alcohol with the formula C2H5OH

It reacts with conc. Sulphuric acid to give the unsaturated compound Y called ethene with formula C2H4

Compound Z evolved after reaction of alcohol with sodium is hydrogen

Formation of Y:

C2H5OH + H2SO4–>C2H4 + H2O

Sulphuric acid plays the role of dehydrating agent.
