A compound ‘X’ on heating with excess conc. sulphuric acid at 443 K gives an unsaturated compound ‘Y’. ‘X’ also reacts with sodium metal to evolve a colourless gas ‘Z’. Identify ‘X’, ‘Y’ and ‘Z’. Write the equation of the chemical reaction of formation of ‘Y’ and also write the role of sulphuric acid in the reaction

Here is your answer

C2H6 + 7/2O2 -----> 2CO2 + 3H2O

Combustion of ethane gives 2 molecules of CO2 and 3 molecules of H2O. So, Z is ethane.

Z is formed on reduction of Y in the presence of nickel.

C2H4 + H2 -----> C2H6

ethanol with a large quantity of concentrated sulphuric acid on heating produces ethene.

CH3-CH2-OH -------> CH2=CH2 + H2O

Therefore, X is ethanol, Y is ethene and Z is ethane.
