Compound X = Ethane (C2H6)

Compound Y = Ethene (C2H4)

Gas Z = Hydrogen Gas (H2)

1.) Reaction of ethane to Ethene in presence of Sulphuric acid (H2SO4)

Hot conc.

CH3CH2OH --------------------> CH2=CH2. + H2O

Ethane H2SO4. Ethene

Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) here, acts a dehydrating agent. It dehydrates ethane to give Ethene. It removes the water from Ethane which results into the formation of unsaturated compound. The formation of H2O (water) shows that the ethane is dehydrated.

2.) reaction of ethane with sodium

CH3CH2OH + Na -------> CH3CH2ONa + H2 ^

Ethane Sodium Sodium

Ethoxide.
