Step-by-step explanation:

U=-8cm m=+3

Now, m=-v/u

-v=m*u

-v=3(-8)=-24

v=24cm

So,

1/f=1/v+1/u

1/f=1/24+1/-8

=1/24-1/8

=1-3/24

=-2/24

=1/-12

f=-12cm

Hope it helps you dear .....

Given : A converging mirror, forms a three times magnified virtual image when an object is placed at a distance of 8cm from it.

To find : (i) The position of the image

(ii) The focal length of the converging mirror.

solution : magnification of mirror, m = +3 [ as image is virtual ]

object distance, u = - 8cm

we know, magnification, m = -v/u

⇒+3 = -v/(-8cm)

v = +24 cm [ positive sign indicates image forms opposite side of mirror. ]

The position of image is 24 cm from the mirror.

using formula, 1/v + 1/u = 1/f

⇒1/+24 + 1/-8 = 1/f

⇒1/f = 1/24 - 3/24 = -2/24 = -1/12

⇒f = -12 cm

Therefore focal length of converging mirror is 12cm.
